Abstract

Sustainable economy seeks harmonize economic profitability, social welfare and care for environment. The need to protect the environment has motivated the increase the demands of stakeholders in evolution of environmental management in organizations, moving from an anthropocentric approach to an orientation to sustainability. This paper presents a hispanic literature review on the evolution of environment caring in the organizations. Emphasis is placed on Environmental Management Systems, and the role of Management Accounting as a framework that enables both evaluating the organization’s environment performance and developing indicators for external reports. The evolution of environmental management is graphically synthesized and its disciplinary link with Accounting is shown.
